Recently, the measles outbreak and the reactions of different government officials made headlines in New York and around the country. Agudath Israel released a statement (see here) expressing its deep concern about the outbreak and also spoke out about the infectious hatred of anti-Semitism that has spread as well. My colleague Avrohom Weinstock was quoted extensively on this topic in a Fox news article and provided a responsible and reasonable voice to the media.
Last month, Agudath Israel highlighted the work of our Washington office. Chaskel Bennett, a member of Agudath Israel’s board of trustees shared some of his personal reflections on the importance of the office and the work of our vice president for government affairs, Rabbi Abba Cohen. In the last few days, Rabbi Cohen submitted a memo to the Department of Education highlighting issues with Title I, and attended the official swearing in ceremony for US Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combatting anti-Semitism Elan Carr, among many other events, meetings, and issues he deals with each week.
In the courts: Agudath Israel submitted a brief to the US Supreme Court in a case in Montana, which could have implications around the country (see our brief and article here). In New York, attorney Avi Schick joined my colleagues for a taping of Agudah Live to discuss some of the issues surrounding the “substantial equivalency” lawsuit. To watch, click on the image below.
In Maryland, Agudath Israel mourned the passing of Speaker of the House of Delegates Michael Busch on the last day of session, while in Illinois, Agudah congratulated Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot on her election victory.
