Imagine if the state provided every Georgia parent with $6,000 per child to use on educational expenses including tuition?
That may become a reality for Georgia parents, but we need your help.
Recently the Georgia Senate Committee on Youth and Education voted to pass Senate Bill 233 ‘The Georgia Promise Scholarship Act’.
This bill would create an Education Savings Account (ESA) program. Under this program, the state would provide parents with an account and deposit $6,000 per student opting out of the public school system. An ESA can be spent on a wide range of educational expenses including private school tuition. .
As the bill is CURRENTLY written all families would be eligible to apply for an ESA, with low income families being prioritized. HOWEVER things can change quickly, There is currently an effort underway to change the language of the bill to limit the program to students attending or assigned to specific failing public schools. Sadly this would mean denying this opportunity from most Georgia parents including the overwhelming majority of our community.
Please take a minute of your time and complete the action alert linked below to reach out to lawmakers and urge them to keep the language that would allow all families into the program and reject any amendment that would limit the ESA eligibility.
We expect a full Senate floor vote as early as this coming Monday, March 6th, so please act right away.
The action alert includes a default message. Should you choose to edit the message please keep the following in mind:
Don’t Threaten.
Be Polite.
Make it personal.
Some talking points you can include:
• Every child is unique with a different type of learning style and needs.
• Parents know best what type of education or school meets the needs of their child.
• Focus on the benefit to children, not the private school. This program doesn’t limit the use of the funds to a school. It includes a wide range of educational expenses including tutors, school uniforms, transportation and or other educational uses.
