This Friday, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order allowing in-person special education services for the upcoming summer months.
This order offers great relief to worried parents all across the state. The period of COVID-19 was difficult for special needs children as essential therapies and programs were abruptly cut-off, leaving parents fearful for their children’s general wellbeing and growth.

Agudath Israel’s Project LEARN has been hard at work these past months, advocating on behalf of the special needs community. Mrs. Leah Steinberg, Director of Project LEARN, said, “Agudath Israel is relieved by this executive order. I have spoken to many parents who have witnessed their child’s regression over the past months. Hopefully, this Executive Order will stop the regression and allow our children’s health to finally progress.”

With this executive order in place, New York City Department of Education, as well as other Education Departments throughout the state, can begin to administer the necessary services to eligible children.

Project LEARN will continue to work on securing more services for our special-needs children as New York State continues to reopen.
