Two of the largest school voucher programs in the country are about to get bigger…and better.
On Wednesday, Florida’s House of Representatives voted to consolidate its five school choice programs into three and expand eligibility for more families (see our press release here). The next day, Florida Senate leaders agreed to adopt the House version and it is scheduled for an upcoming vote. Indiana’s House and Senate also came together Thursday to approve a budget bill (here). The bill includes a major expansion to the country’s largest voucher program (serving 36,707 students last year).
Perhaps the biggest source of funding for private schools students this year will come from the two COVID-relief bills enacted by Congress since December. On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was the featured guest of an Agudah webinar for New York Jewish school leaders. Senator Schumer summarized the various programs that can benefit schools and other nonprofits, and answered questions. The participants thanked Senator Schumer for playing the key role in securing $2.75 billion for nonpublic schools despite pushback from opponents. To watch highlights from the webinar click here.
