Dear NYC Principals and Administrators,
If you have not yet submitted your energy and water consumption to the city for the 2023 calendar year, the final deadline to do so is May 1, 2024. To get started on benchmarking, click here.
The new NYC Local Law 97 (LL97) has gone into effect, and it applies to all buildings over 25,000 square feet. It is one of the most ambitious plans for reducing emissions in the nation. As of now, buildings have been allotted the amount of energy that they can use. In 2025, buildings who exceeded their permitted carbon emissions in 2024 will be fined and these fines can be very significant. The deadline to file the first LL97 Emissions report will be May 1st, 2025, to report on 2024 energy usage.
Here are some statistics on the sort of fines schools could be facing:

As an example, here are the projected fines for a Yeshiva in Brooklyn. |

Based on their energy usage in 2022, they could be facing $49,000 fines per year starting this year, with the fines increasing to $73,000 in 2030. If they have recently implemented energy efficiency measures, then these fines may be reduced or eliminated.
To see your own building’s projected fines, you can look up your building on the NYC Accelerator website as well as on this calculator. Click here for a demo on how to use these tools. Please note that these calculators may not be 100% accurate, as they may display lower fines because they assume you will do upgrades to your properties. You can also get a free LL97 assessment at EZ Energy Services, as well as at iag Energy.
For information on how to increase your building’s energy efficiency, reduce energy costs and avoid fines, see this video from Yeshiva Summit 2023, as well as the accompanying slides.
As always, feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any questions.
