Dear NYC Principals and Administrators,
If you have not yet submitted your energy and water consumption to the city for the 2022 calendar year, the final deadline to do so is May 1, 2023.
- The NYC Benchmarking Law requires owners of buildings that meet the criteria outlined in the law to annually measure their energy and water consumption through a process called benchmarking.
- There are specific criteria for which buildings need to submit this information. You can check if this law applies to your school by searching for your school’s 10-digit BBL (Borough, Block and Lot number) on this list. To find your buildings BBL, you can search here.
- Once your report is ready, upload the new 2023 Reporting Template to your Portfolio Manager account and follow the 2023 Submission Instructions to submit the report to NYC.
- Click here to get started.
- Failure to submit the report by the deadline can result in a penalty of up to $2,000.
If you have any questions, you can reach out to the NYC Sustainability Help Center at [email protected] or (212) 566-5584.
Highlights from the “Energy Usage: Compliance and Opportunities” session at the Yeshiva Summit.
Key Points:
- NYC Local Law 97 mandates strict carbon emissions limits for buildings over 25,000 square feet, with significant financial penalties for noncompliance.
- Auditing benchmarking data and aligning compliance efforts with NYC regulations is important to avoid penalties and ensure a building’s energy performance is accurately reported.
- The best pathway to compliance is to prioritize energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy installations, such as solar panels, to reduce a building’s carbon footprint.
- Lowering energy usage through efficiency upgrades, taking advantage of grants, and optimizing energy usage to avoid peak demand charges can significantly reduce costs and carbon emissions.
As always, feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any questions.
