EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR MICHIGAN FAMILIES!

A group of Michigan citizens have launched a statewide petition drive to create a $500 million scholarship program for families to be used towards educational expenses including tutoring, special education services, and private school tuition.

If the petition receives approximately 340,000 valid signatures, the Student Opportunity Scholarship Act can be passed into law by the Legislature without requiring a signature from the Governor.

How will the Opportunity Scholarship program work?

Individuals and businesses will be able to donate to scholarship granting organizations (SGO’s) and receive a dollar for dollar tax credit in return. Eligible parents can apply to the SGOs for scholarship accounts to help pay for their child’s education expenses such as tuition, tutoring, textbooks, uniforms, after school child care, OT, PT, speech-language therapy, and transportation costs.

Who is eligible for a scholarship?

The maximum annual income threshold to be eligible for a scholarship is dependent on the size of your household (see chart). The maximum scholarship amount is determined on a sliding scale. Lower income families, foster children and children with disabilities are eligible for the maximum scholarship of $7,830. Children attending public school are eligible for smaller scholarships.
