This past Tuesday, the Ohio House Education Committee amended House Bill 113 (High school graduation-require cardiopulmonary resuscitation training), which would include instruction to high school students in CPR and AEDs as a requirement for graduation. The original bill extended this mandate to students in nonpublic schools. With the blessing of the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Nathan Manning (R- North Ridgeville), the committee amended the bill to clarify that this requirement would not extend to students in nonpublic schools. While the goals of the bill are commendable, we appreciate Rep. Manning, Vice Chair Hayes, and the members of the committee for recognizing the distinction between public and nonpublic schools and leaving these decisions up to the individual schools. Ensuring the independence of nonpublic schools continues to be a priority for Agudath Israel of America.
