PNI Updates

Dear NYC Principals and Administrators,

Please see below for various updates regarding the Parental Notice of Intent (PNI) that’s due on June 1 of every year to request special education services for the coming school year.

  • If any parent has not yet submitted a PNI, also referred to as the June 1 Letter, for the 25-26 school year, the final deadline to do so is December 31, 2025.

  • Last week, NYCPS emailed an “acknowledgment“ to the parents who submitted a late PNI for the current school year. Parents should be encouraged to read the acknowledgment carefully before agreeing to its contents. If any school or parent requires assistance in understanding the acknowledgment and deciding how to move forward, they should reach out to their Navigators (contact info listed below).

  • It has come to our attention that there are parents who, prior to June 1, 2025, sent an email to the CSE PNI email address, but the attachment with the NYCPS template did not attach to their email. We have been successful in assisting those parents, and so any parent in that situation should reach out to a Navigator for help.

  • During the IDEA consultation meetings currently taking place, we recommend that schools take this opportunity to find out the name of every student who has a current IESP, even ones who are not receiving special education services at this time. When the time comes, the school should assist every parent with a current IESP in submitting the PNI for school year 26–27 since we can never know if a student might require the special education services in the coming school year.
