Since its establishment, the Southern Brooklyn Community Organization (SBCO) has been a leader in neighborhood rehabilitation and stabilization, and in providing decent, safe, and sanitary housing for low and moderate-income residents in Brooklyn’s southern tier. SBCO is best known for its development of affordable housing, and for the housing related services it offers. SBCO has contributed to the growth and stability of the Borough Park, Kensington and Flatbush communities.

The recent challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have thrown many long-time homeowners into disarray. At the onset of the virus, SBCO established a Corona Emergency Mortgage Hotline. Within a few days, hundreds of concerned homeowners reached out to SBCO for assistance navigating the confusing mortgage forbearance options banks were offering. SBCO continues to assist these homeowners as they exit from the forbearance programs and get back to paying their mortgages.

SBCO MISSION

To play a leadership role in the rehabilitation and stabilization of the neighborhood as a residential community

To provide decent, safe and sanitary housing, rehabilitated or new, for low and moderate-income residents in the community without relocating them outside the area

To help maintain and enhance the quality of residential life in the community by providing a range of neighborhood and housing services.

SBCO is now beginning to deal with our generation’s biggest housing challenges. The cost of housing has priced many young families out of purchasing homes in well-established Jewish communities. In concert with Agudath Israel’s regional offices throughout the country, SBCO is researching housing opportunities that may be available for these families. SBCO is hopeful to coordinate a sophisticated turn-key program to assist families in identifying the best housing option for their particular needs, and to facilitate a successful move.

SBCO’s activities have acted as a catalyst in promoting over $60 million of private reinvestment in the community.
To date, the organization has successfully completed construction of more than 450 units of housing designated for low and moderate-income families.
