Dear NYC Principals and Administrators,

This is a reminder that School-based assessment (“SBA”) is still available for school administrators to nominate students for Title I and Title III services.  Keep in mind that the DOE urges school administrators to utilize standardized assessments, where possible, in lieu of the SBA assessment. You can see the list of approved standardized assessments here.

If utilizing SBA as an assessment, school administrators must maintain that SBA documentation on file for the school year.  ONPS will request to review all SBA assessments throughout the 2022/2023 school year when completing monitoring visits for the Title I and Title III programs.

Please note: ONPS is currently scheduling visits to schools’ Title I programs. The utilized SBA assessments must demonstrate the learning deficit(s) that deemed the student eligible for Title I and/or Title III nomination.

Below are some possible examples of acceptable School-Based Assessments that may be used:

  • a portfolio or collection of student work demonstrating the identified skill deficit
  • a teacher/school created assessment
  • teacher/school-created rubrics used to assess student work with a copy of the work.

If you have questions about the appropriateness of an SBA that your school would like to utilize, you can reach out to your Field Support Specialist at ONPS for support.

As always, feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any questions.
