Assemblyman Patrick Diegnan (D-18), Chairman of the Assembly Education Committee and Rabbi Avi Schnall, Agudath Israel’s NJ director

On Thursday, Rabbi Avi Schnall, Agudath Israel’s New Jersey director, testified before the Assembly Education Committee in support of bill A-2689 – “Secure Schools for All Children Act”. The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D-Passaic), establishes a State aid program to ensure a safe and secure environment for nonpublic school students, by allocating $144 per student.

The New Jersey 2015-16 State budget, allocates over $195 million for public school security aid, which is an average of $144 per student. In contrast, nonpublic schools currently receive only $25 per student. This bill provides parity between public and nonpublic school children

Rabbi Schnall pointed out the disparity between public and nonpublic students in regard to security funding and the need for all children of the state, regardless of the school they attend, to be safe and secure.

The bill was passed unanimously by the committee. The bill now heads to a full Assembly vote.
