Last week, Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ), visited Agudath Israel of America’s New Jersey Office to learn more about Agudah’s community service initiatives, with a particular focus on Zahav, which provides support and resources for seniors, and Yahalom, which serves families raising children with special needs.
During the visit, Senator Kim met with Agudath Israel staff and community members to discuss the evolving needs of New Jersey families and the critical role community-based organizations play in connecting individuals and families with critical resources, advocacy, and support.
Senator Kim heard firsthand about the work of Zahav and Yahalom from staff and from community members who have benefited from the programs. He praised the programs, noting the critical role they play in helping families navigate complex challenges and build strong support networks.
Mrs. Hadassah Waldman, director of Zahav shared how the program helps seniors and their families navigate aging-related challenges by providing guidance, referrals, educational programming, and assistance with planning for the future. A significant portion of the discussion focused on the growing needs of caregivers and individuals living with dementia, a subject that holds personal significance for Senator Kim following his father’s recent diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Chana Laniado, director of YahalomNJ, highlighted Yahalom’s comprehensive support for families of children with special needs, including advocacy, educational resources, parent support, and community programming.
Throughout the meeting, Senator Kim emphasized the importance of strengthening community support systems and recognized the vital role community organizations such as Agudath Israel play in ensuring that seniors, caregivers, and families have access to the guidance, resources, and advocacy they need. He also discussed opportunities for continued partnership between community organizations and the federal government.
