IMPORTANT TRAVEL ADVISORY: The rules for entry into Israel are changing
What changed?
Starting in August 2024, visitors from visa-exempt countries (like USA and Canada) will be required to obtain an ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter the state of Israel.
How long is the ETA-IL valid?
An approved ETA-IL is valid for 2 years or when your passport expires (whichever comes first)
How long can you stay in Israel for?
Up to 90 days per visit. If you plan to stay for longer than 90 days you will be required to submit an extension request.
Who will be required to attain an ETA-IL?
All travelers to Israel will need a valid visa or ETA-IL before they start their journey.
Israeli citizens or holders of an Israeli identity number do not need to apply for an ETA.
What about students?
Students already possessing student visas are exempt from an ETA-IL.
However, according to those who met with Ministry officials, if a would-be student does not yet have a student visa they must apply for an ETA-IL and select “visit/tourism” (NOT “study)” and must select that they are coming for 90 days or less and then apply for a student visa once in the country.
What about children and minors?
Minors need an ETA-IL, however an adult must apply on their behalf.
What is the cost to apply?
25 NIS (see below re: fee waived during the pilot phase in July and August)
How: To apply for an ETA-IL go to https://israel-entry.piba.gov.il/
How long does it take to process once I apply?
Most applicants will get an immediate response, but it may take up to 72 hours
When do I need to apply?
Applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel to Israel. You do not have to show proof of travel plans, but you will have to enter a date of expected entry into Israel. We recommend that you apply for an ETA-IL well in advance of potential travel and prior to booking a flight. This will save you from unnecessary expenses, possible delays, and help if you end up needing to urgently travel sooner.
Notes:
Having a valid ETA-IL travel authorization does not automatically grant you the right to enter Israel as all travelers are subject to border control checks.
ETA-IL system pilot phase: Starting June 1st, 2024 the ETA-IL system will open for application submissions as a pilot program only for holders of US and German passports. During the pilot phase, submitting an application will be voluntary and exempt from fees. The system will open to other nationalities on July 1st, 2024. The pilot phase will provide valuable insights, and if necessary, the system will be further improved.
The information above is only an unofficial summary based on the preliminary details available. Please see the Ministry website https://israel-entry.piba.gov.il/ for official rules, which will be updated and are subject to change.
