Agudath Israel’s chairman of the board of trustees, Sol Werdiger, speaking at the rally in support of the “Parental Choice in Education” initiative

On Sunday, hundreds of Jewish students and community leaders packed Yeshivat Shaare Torah in Flatbush to hear New York Governor Andrew Cuomo rally the community in support of the “Parental Choice in Education” initiative. Agudath Israel of America’s chairman of the board of trustees Sol Werdiger emceed the event and thanked Governor Cuomo for his leadership.

The new proposal would provide for $150 million annually in education tax credits, the majority of which would be set aside for (1) tuition-paying, low-income parents of nonpublic school children, and (2) contributions to scholarship funds for needy students in nonpublic schools.

Agudath Israel has embarked on a major campaign to galvanize the Jewish community and encourage the New York State Assembly to support an education tax credit. The State Senate passed the Education Investment Incentive Act earlier this year and Governor Cuomo made it clear that the Parental Choice in Education is one of his top priorities in the remaining weeks of the legislative session. While most Assemblymembers support an education tax credit, the Assembly has yet to bring a proposal to a vote.

New York Readers: Please contact your Assemblymember and ask them to support the Education Tax Credit by calling (518) 455-4100.  Give the switchboard operator your address to be connected to the correct official. To learn more go to http://www.investined.org/.
