Will School Choice Finally Come to the Lone Star StateOn Wednesday evening, parents and community leaders filled the gym of Yeshivat Torat Emet in Houston to learn about school choice and understand what they can do to help the Texas effort to pass meaningful school choice legislation. Hosted by Texans for Education Opportunity, the event featured Agudath Israel of America’s national director of state relations, Rabbi A. D. Motzen, and Dr. Allan Jacob, president of Toras Emes Academy of Miami. Rabbi Motzen gave an overview of the legislative goals and activities of the statewide school choice coalition, which includes Agudath Israel. He then spoke about what has been achieved in other states and practical steps which the local community can take to help bring private school choice to Texas.

Dr. Jacob gave the audience an informative and entertaining, behind-the-scenes look at the successful school choice effort in Florida which will generate close to $17 million in scholarship dollars for students choosing Jewish day schools this year. Both speakers encouraged the audience to be more politically engaged. The attendees were also encouraged to travel to Austin next week for a school choice rally that is expected to have 4,000 attendees at the Texas Capitol and the participation of Governor Greg Abbott.
